Dog Days

This is just a quickie illustration for the Illustration Friday Web site, where participants can submit drawings based on a weekly subject. Every Friday a "pick of the week" is randomly chosen and a new topic is picked to be illustrated. It's mainly just for kicks.

This week's keyword was "spent." I guess this can be taken in a couple of different ways, but when i hear the word it makes me think of someone or something that has spent all of their energy. I found some pretty funny web images of some tired dogs and took some liberties with one to come up with the drawing below..

Without further ado, here's my entry for this week.

Shoes Your Own Adventure

This shoe was a spec piece for a job that it looks like I'll be taking on for a few weeks. I'll be at Elan Polo as an illustrator working on shoe illustrations all day. I'll be there full time, and today about three new jobs came in the door to work on ... when it rains it pours. I should also have a spot of design work coming out in the next issue of Eleven Magazine, which is changing gears for upcoming issues and should be really slick and noticeable to regular readers. That's all I'll say without running the risk of giving too much away! All this combined with a couple of other projects coming in is going to make for a busy next few weeks, but I'm looking forward to it.

Sweet Like Candy

This is just a little self-promotional postcard that's going out to about 250 dentists around the St. Louis area. Otherwise ... this would make zero sense.

Jeff & Lee

Jeff is an old friend and one of the most talented tattoo artists on the west coast, do yourself a favor and check out his work here. He's based in Los Angeles and as always, is currently taking appointments. Trust me, this dude abides.

Pete & Agnieszka

Two more of my swell friends: Pete and Agnieszka (pronounced the best you can say it). I'm really happy with both of these, but especially Pete's. Agnieszka's is nice, but I don't prefer the portrait style of it, that frog costume was too tempting not to draw though.

Alex & Lindsy

I've been playing around with a couple of new techniques in Illustrator/Photoshop. The one on the right is my first attempt, while the one on the left is the second (yep, backwards). I think it's progressing pretty well, I'll probably do a few more of these so check back soon.

¡El día del toro!

This is a piece I was invited to do by alreadytv.com for their weekly artist series. The only stipulation was that I pick a topic relating to sports and come up with my own commentary. This was all hand-drawn in Adobe Illustrator with the exception of the background, which was a manipulation of a photo I took of some grungy paper.

Here is the blurb on the Web site:
Bullfighting has been in practice for over two millennia. D
uring the 2010 Festival of Saint Isidro at the Plaza de Toros las Ventas bullring a matador, Julio Aparicio, was gored through his throat only to have the six inch tip of the bull's horn erupt through his mouth like a hellish piston.

This cruel sport exists today only because of tradition. A game devised to taunt, humiliate, and murder the animal, bringing to light the most barbaric and primordial urges of humankind. Luckily, Aparicio survived this encounter, but unfortunately the bull was quickly disposed of. Regardless, that day was a day of justice for the bulls and May 21, 2010 should forever be known as: ¡El
día del toro!

New Piece for Alreadytv.com

Here's a new illustration piece for alreadytv.com. You can view the piece directly here.

This is based off of the story of the little league father/coach that punched his child in the face after he was ejected from a game. It's really baffling that this would happen, especially right out in the open. The father was arrested and spent one night in jail. I don't know if he was wearing cut-off jean shorts or not, but it definitely adds to the drama!
